The hang-5 ranks as one of the more fun tricks to
do. It is possible to link different tricks both into and out of hang-5's. Hang-5's are
not an easily learned trick. It is a question of how many times you are willing to throw
yourself forward over the bars without touching the brakes and STILL falling flat on your
face. The trick is great because it gets easier to do the more you do it and becomes a
very consistent trick. Once you have the trick dialed in then you will be able to control
your direction as well as maintain your balance.
- When first learning the trick begin by rolling at a medium/slow
speed with your right foot on the pedal and your left foot on the front left peg, you will
need to be sitting down, or standing way back on your right foot.
- Stand up and pivot your body at your hips. DON'T just throw your
entire body forward- Since you aren't grabbing your brakes then you can't bring the front
wheel under you by throwing your weight forward.
- PIVOT by throwing your shoulders forward and drawing your left
foot underneath of you (the one on the peg). At the same time you will want to pull your
right foot off of the pedal so it can help you balance.
- When the back wheel comes off of the ground extend your arms until
they are almost straight. This will force the bars forward and the seat up to your butt.
You want to use the seat to help balance yourself and to keep the frame from shaking
around while you are balancing
- Balancing is the HARDEST part. The first few (thousand) time you
try hang-5's you will not be able to get the back end up. Then you will get the back end
of the bike up and start going OVER the handlebars. Generally balance on this trick just
can't be taught, you have to practice it. Think about keeping your LEFT foot (the one on
the peg) under the center of balance. Your right foot will swing on its own accord to keep
your left foot where it should be.
- REMEMBER- No brakes are needed for this trick
If you are
moving up to no-footed hang-5's (hang-nothings) then you can learn by feathering your
brakes but there is no need to touch your brakes at all once you learn hang-nothings.
- To ride out just let the back end fall to the ground- this is
undoubtedly the easiest part of the trick.
