The rock walk is one of the better beginner tricks to learn. While this trick is
not used often to link more advanced tricks the skills that are learned from a rock walk
are critical! Tricks such as fire-hydrants and 180 rollbacks benefit from your ability to know how to move
your bike around like you do for a rock walk.
- Begin by riding at a slow pace with both feet on the pedals, left
foot forward.
- Veer to your left slightly and then as you pull the bike slightly
to the right whip your hips from right to left and grab both brakes HARD.
- Because you weight is travelling to the left the back wheel of the
bike should come off the ground and travel through about a 180 degree turn to the left
(clockwise) on the front wheel.
- To help the bike travel further through the pivot on the front
wheel, pull the bike underneath of you and push it from the right side of your body to the
left side.
- As soon as the back wheel hits the ground, your body should be way
out to the right side of the bike- YANK the front wheel up off the ground and whip it
around through another 180 (on the back wheel this time).
- Pull the bike underneath of you from one side of your body to the
other, as you did when your were spinning on the front wheel.
- When the front tire hits the ground let go of the brakes and ride
away or keep holding them and try to rotate around again... How many can you do?
FAQ: What does it mean and why would I whip the bike underneath
of me?
A: YOU weight a lot more than the bike- therefore if you decide
that you want the bike to do a 180 on the front wheel or the back wheel then if you give
it a little direction it will go. The hard part and a really good skill to have is knowing
how to whip the bike around like that. Once you learn it, things like 180 bunnyhops will
become something that won't be too difficult to learn.
