The whiplash is one of the original 'rolling' tricks. It is done similar to a
tailwhip but instead of standing on the tire and grabbing the brakes you stand on the pegs
and kick the frame around while rolling. In a word- whiplashes are FUN! You
can do tricks into and out of whiplashes, you can do multiple whiplashes, you can do them
in either direction or with either foot. Of course the more ways you try them the
more difficult they will be but that's okay because they are all fun.
- While rolling at a medium speed switch your body to the left side of the bike with your
left foot on the front left peg and your right foot on the left rear peg (like with a fire-hydrant).
- Swerve the bike slightly to the left to gain some momentum and PUSH the frame around to
the right with your right foot. Don't just kick the frame quicky you want to push
the same way you do for a tailwhip.
- At the same time as you push you lean your chest forward and pull your left foot (still
on the peg) backwards. By rotating your body forward over your hips and your foot
backwards it draws the frame forward over the front wheel. This is the EXACT same
method that is used for the hang-5.
- As the frame hits the halfway point of its revolution around the bike switch feet from
the left foot on the front left peg, to your right foot on the front right peg.
- Now raise your left foot and prepare for the frame to come around.- Riding out is
the most difficult part of the trick! All you have to do is let the frame come all
the way around and put your left foot on the top tube and coast out of the trick.
- It takes days to learn the last step. Because you are not using your brakes at all
during this trick you will have a tendency to fall either forwards over the bars or put
your foot down as you fall backwards. It will just take time and practice to learn
the right balance point so that you don't fall either direction but are able to put your
foot on the frame.
Now that you've done a single whiplash it is time to learn multiple whiplashes.
To do multiples it is not required that you use brakes but it makes the trick MUCH easier
to learn. If you can learn multiple whiplashes without brakes then you are a born
natural rider. Very few riders, even on the pro level, can do multiple brakeless
whiplashes.
But with brakes and given a little hill to roll down you can do multiple whiplashes,
and if you are good at them you can maintain your speed. How many could you do?
I've seen someone do 117 down a hill... a LOOOooooonnnnnggggg.....
hill!
